  About Athletics

Being in the St. Agnes Academy Athletics program just might be one of the most rewarding experiences of a student's time at SAA. We offer 12 sports during 3 seasons and have over 400 students involved in the program. Athletes are given an equal and fair workout to try and compete in our program. We have won more than 80 state titles and compete with the top schools in the state of Texas. Welcome to the St. Agnes athletics program!

St. Agnes Academy is affiliated with Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS).  TAPPS offers a district schedule with a play-off format similar in nature to UIL public institutions.  State Championships are acknowledged in a myriad of sports including Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, Golf, Tennis, Track & Field and Softball.

Water Polo, Lacrosse and Field Hockey are run by independent organizations, and compete towards state play-off competition within these organizations. Junior Varsity and Varsity teams are fielded in all sports, except Golf. Volleyball and Basketball also offer a third freshmen-only team.  An Athletic Fee of $75 is required per athletic participant per sport at St. Agnes.  We are very proud of our student-athletes who successfully combine the challenges of athletics and academia with equal enthusiasm and success.

 Practices

All sports conduct practices each day of the week in which a team is not competing in a game, match, or meet.  This generally constitutes three practices per week along with two competitions, or, as in track and cross country, practice is held throughout the week with competitions on Saturdays.  Practices are primarily after school, and most are one and one half to two hours in length.  The Water Polo and Swim teams train at Strake Jesuit pool.

Golf and Tennis teams train at various off campus sites. Our home golf course is Braeburn Country Club and the tennis team works out at Lee LeClear Tennis Center.

The Cross Country team trains on campus as well as Memorial Park, Allen Parkway, and other running venues.  All other sports practice on campus, at our satellite campus, or in conjunction with Strake Jesuit facilities.  Coaches transport team members to and from practice and competition sites.

Fall Season

The following sports teams are in competition during the fall season: Cross Country, Volleyball, and Field Hockey.

Tryouts for Cross Country and Volleyball will begin BEFORE school starts.  Exact dates will be posted on the SAA website by March 1 on the individual team web page. Please curtail summer plans to be in attendance for tryouts for these two sports! Field Hockey will begin when school starts and information as to exact location and times will be posted by early June.

If you have a previous commitment that will not allow you to be in attendance for tryouts, you MUST contact the head coach of that sport by email and provide reasons. At that poing, the coach will begin a dialogue to see if any alternative plan can be implemented. The head coach for Cross Country is Alice Melendez. You can contact her at: amelende@st-agnes.org. The head coach for volleyball is Lynn Kercheval. You can contact her at
lkerchev@st-agnes.org .

You will receive specific information as to exactly what to do, where to report, what to bring, and who to meet for the fall sports tryouts. They can be found on the St. Agnes website under each sport and also in your registration packets in April. Carefully review the information at that time.

Most of your questions can be answered by surfing the athletics pages.  Daily e-mail and voice mail retrieval will be available until school ends in May. Beginning in June coaches will be on summer vacation. Coaches do not check e-mail/voice mail daily over the summer, if at all.
